New Report Shows How to Scale Mobile Applications

With mobile phone penetration continuing to expand in Africa and technology becoming both more powerful and less expensive, new trends in mobile applications are emerging. A new report by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) on mobile applications in East Africa examines the services offered - from finance to health and education - the barriers to delivery, and approaches to successfully scaling-up applications beyond the pilot stage.

High-speed Internet drives economic growth

A World Bank / IFC report by says for every 10 percentage-point increase in high-speed Internet connections there is an increase in economic growth of 1.3 percentage points. The Global Information and Communications Technology Department of the World Bank and IFC has published an online resource for its global report: IC4D, Information and Communications for Development 2009: Extending Reach and Increasing Impact.

The first World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Geneva, Switzerland in December 2003, brought together leaders from governments around the world to discuss and adopt strategies for creating an inclusive Information Society. One outcome of the
Summit was a Plan of Action enunciating ten targets to be achieved by 2015 of which the first is: “...to connect villages with ICTs and establish community access points...”. This report describes research to measure that target.
