Background

The infoDev's Digital Entrepreneurship Program has been supporting business incubators and innovation hubs in Africa — including CTIC Dakar, iHub and the mLab Southern Africa — that work with digital entrepreneurs. As a part of the current efforts, the unit is looking for a consultant to support CTIC Dakar and iHub’s capacity to provide effective access to finance support to their client entrepreneurs, including those that participate in the regional Jambar Tech Lab and Traction Camp acceleration program. Core elements of the TA will include “Master-training” and on-going coaching to CTIC Dakar and iHub on capital raising and investor engagement.

Responsibilities include

  • Conducting a diagnostics of CTIC Dakar and iHub’s current Access to Finance capacity, such as reviewing existing services/curriculum, assessing the target/client entrepreneurs as well as investor networks/connections and determining the appropriate course of action;
  • Helping CTIC Dakar and iHub to map local angel investors in the target countries and contribute to the mapping of international digital/tech investors interested in African start-ups;
  • Helping CTIC Dakar and iHub to cultivate investor networks and strengthening its linkages with early-stage financiers;
  • Training/coaching/mentoring CTIC Dakar and iHub on Access to Finance, including how to run investment readiness program or other workshops to increase the investability of iHub entrepreneurs. Train-the-trainer method may include working closely with CTIC Dakar and iHub A2F team member(s) assigned to provide fundraising coaching/mentoring to the most promising entrepreneurs who are seeking to raise capital;
  • Helping CTIC Dakar and iHub to integrate access to finance services into the business model and sustainability plan to ensure financial viability of the activities

Qualifications

The Consultant will need to demonstrate expertise and experience in the following areas:

  • Fluency in English required; fluency in French desirable
  • Africa-based consultants are strongly preferred but not required
  • Master's degree in business administration or a professional discipline or equivalent experience
  • At least 8-10 years of experience in the venture capital industry or angel investing
  • Strong understanding of concepts related to emerging market entrepreneurship, including venture incubation, acceleration, and startup access to early stage capital
  • Strong understanding of how to engage investors and strong international networks with emerging markets focused tech investors
  • General understanding of monitoring and evaluation methodologies and the ability to assist in data collection and analysis
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit and experience working in or with a start-up
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills and a positive, team-spirited approach to working with others
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Experience working in a multicultural team

Expected Scope and Duration of Assignment

The assignment will be up to 90 days during the period of May 22, 2017, and December 31, 2018.
