3rd infoDev Global Forum on Innovation & Business Incubation

The 3rd infoDev Global Forum will be held in Florianopolis, Brazil on October 26-30, 2009 and will integrate the 3rd infoDev Global Forum with ANPROTEC's 19th Brazilian National Seminar on Science Parks and Business Incubation (more details about the 3rd Global Forum: http://www.infodev.org/en/Article.345.html).The Task Manager will work closely with the infoDev Team based in Washington, DC, as well as with infoDev’s partners in Brazil. S/he will be a core member of infoDev’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship team, and will be responsible for the managing the preparations and delivery of the 3rd Global Forum.

Background

Every two years, infoDev organizes a Global Forum, which brings its global network of incubators together along with other key stakeholders, including financiers, policymakers and entrepreneurs.  The first two Global Forum were held in India (New Delhi 2004 and Hyderabad 2006).  These events represented the first time that the global incubation community, particularly from developing countries, gathered in one location with more than 400 participants attending the event in Hyderabad (more details: /en/Publication.231.html). 

For the 3rd Global Forum, infoDev is partnering with Brazil as the host country for the event.  The 3rd Global Forum will be held in Florianopolis, Brazil on October 26-30, 2009 and will integrate the 3rd infoDev Global Forum with ANPROTEC's 19th Brazilian National Seminar on Science Parks and Business Incubation (more details about the 3rd Global Forum: /en/Article.345.html).

Scope of Work

The Task Manager will work closely with the infoDev Team based in Washington, DC, as well as with infoDev’s partners in Brazil.  S/he will be a core member of infoDev’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship team, and will be responsible for the managing the preparations and delivery of the 3rd Global Forum. 

The Task Manager will:

  • Take the lead for infoDev in planning, organizing and implementing the 3rd Global Forum and will be responsible for the following:
  • Preparing and monitoring the budget for the event in close coordination with infoDev’s partners in Brazil, particularly ANPROTEC
  • Developing the agenda in collaboration with ANPROTEC and infoDev’s other partners, including handling the speaker invitations and other logistics
  • Maintaining the regular communication with ANPROTEC and providing bi-monthly reports on the status of the planning to infoDev’s Program Manager.  This will include monitoring a project timeline with key milestones to ensure that preparations are proceeding as needed.
  • Coordinating the Steering Committee for the Forum, which will be chaired by the World Bank’s Director for the Global ICT Department and the Minister of Science & Technology in Brazil.
  • Working closely with infoDev’s Team Members handling the partnership outreach, communications and external relations, including coordinating event sponsorship development with ANPROTEC
  • Oversee the event management with ANPROTEC during the Forum in Florianopolis
  • Oversee the event follow-up, including the completion of the Global Forum report which will highlight key outcomes from the event, as well as prepare a post-event report on lessons learned and opportunities for improving the design and implementation of the next Forum

Qualifications

  • Excellent project management skills and demonstrated experience in organizing high-level international events
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, and experience working with a variety of stakeholders, including senior government officials and private sector representatives
  • Fluency in English and Portuguese (both speaking and writing)
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently with limited supervision
  • Experience working in a multicultural team and proven ability to build relationships with project partners
  • Experience working on entrepreneurship and SME development issues in developing countries would be a plus
  • Masters degree in Business Administration, International Affairs, Communications or other relevant fields
  • 5+ years relevant professional work experience

Expected Scope and Duration of Assignment:

  • The consultant will be hired for an estimated 130 days during the period of the end of April through mid-November 2009.  During this period the consultant would be expected to work full-time on this assignment. 
  • The position will involve travel.  If the consultant is based outside of Brazil, the consultant will need to spend time in Washington, DC with the infoDev Team, as well as in Brazil working with infoDev’s partners.
  • infoDev’s preference is for the consultant to be based in Brazil.  However, this is not a requirement and infoDev is open to discussing other options.
