Launched in Chile by the International Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (3IE) of the Federico Santa Maria University of Technology (UTFSM), this project is an innovative way to support the start up of new technology companies.
Planned to last 10 months, the Spin Off project aims to form a new work area inside the 3IE institute exclusively dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs who create new technology companies under the wings of already consolidated enterprises. Led by UTFSM, the project consists of establishing a basic work methodology inside several organizations, while simultaneously planning a strategic alignment of the organizations' areas of innovation, business plans, and project management.
In order to carry out this task, 3IE has conducted several seminars (“Strategic Alignment of Corporate Technological Spin Offs”, “Commercialization of Corporate Technological Spin Offs”, and “Competitive Strategies for the undertaking of Corporate Technological Spin Offs”), workshops (Patents and TRIZ Methodology), and work days. The overall focus is on promoting this new work area centered on innovation, entrepreneurship and creation of new organizations.
A special characteristic of this project is that 3IE will work directly with the executives and directors of the companies Digevo Group, YT Ingeniería, A.J. Broom and Oxiquim; companies that, in addition to supporting the launching of the initiative, are trying to become generators of technology spin-offs.
The culmination of this project will be marked by a public contest that will convene all the entrepreneurial innovation projects. The best proposals will be awarded with the possibility of being able to found a legally formed company that will be transformed into a new business unit.
Among the several activities that have taken place so far, one that stood out was the seminar on“Strategic Alignment of Corporate Technological Spin Offs”. This seminar was held on April 3-4, 2009, with the participation of experts including Neantro Saavedra-Rivano (Researcher at the University of Tsukuba, Japan), Gustavo Pinto (Management Consultant for high technology companies in Silicon Valley, California), and Claudio Furtado (Director of the Getulio Vargas Foundation Center for the study of Private Equity, Sao Paulo, Brazil). Presentations were also carried out by Andrea Corvera (Manager of Entrepreneurship and Coordinator of the Columbus School at 3IE), and Rodrigo Andreucci (lawyer and masters in rights of the Pontificia Catholic University in Valparaíso).
The next seminar, “Commercialization of Corporate Technological Spin Offs”, will be held on May 15-16, 2009. Here, participants will learn in depth about how to effectively apply the various strategies involved in the process of commercialization of corporate entrepreneurship.
