Within the framework of a Tour of Businesses in Chile organized by Endeavor, a delegation of Latin American entrepreneurs visited 3IE and the University Federico Santa María at the end of June 2009. The objective was to generate business opportunities and gain knowledge of the Chilean market by visiting successful companies and holding meetings with potential clients and investors.
Chile is one of the most developed countries in Latin America. Endeavor Uruguay organized the business tour to promote the exchange of better business practices in this time of economic crisis. More than 20 entrepreneurs from Uruguay and Argentina participated in three program parts: visiting Chilean businesses Chocolate Brunatto and Cervecería Kross; learning the history of the entrepreneurs Nutrabien, Geomar, Betazeta; and participating in motivational group activities led by the entrepreneur Rodrigo Jordan. In addition to this, they visited major universities and business incubators located in them.
The delegation was primarily composed of entrepreneurs from the program Promesas (Promises) of Uruguay Endeavor, as well as representatives from the Dominican Republic and the United States and mentors and staff. The idea was to create room for networking and exchange of experiences and better practices where the entrepreneurs could strengthen their strategies and converse with others.
The delegation was received by Victor Aguilera, the director of the 3IE Institute. He presented a brief introduction to the University Federico Santa María and the operation of the 3IE Institute. This was followed by presentations by representatives of three companies incubated at 3IE: Valtec, Sugaut and Aerodomo. Each relayed their personal experiences as entrepreneurs.
During his presentation, Victor Aguilera expressed that in order to teach entrepreneurship as is done at the University, it is necessary to have had practical experience: "Researchers take money and transform it into knowledge. We do not do that. What we do is take knowledge and transform it into money through the creation of technological companies. That is our focus." He added: "The best definition of entrepreneurship to me is the capability to perceive opportunities beyond the resources that I have under control today. And that has a lot to do with the capacity to think big and with the ability to negotiate or obtain the resources needed to take advantage of the opportunity."
