infoDev Business Incubator Network member awarded USD 2 million to support dynamic businesses in Panama

The City of Knowledge has signed an agreement with the InterAmerican Development Bank(MIF - IDB) to support the development of the entrepreneurial culture and the increase of dynamic businesses in Panama and to establish a sustainable scheme for the promotion, incubation and financing of these developments

This important project will not only foster the development of the entrepreneurial culture and the increase of dynamic businesses in Panama, but also establish a technically and financially sustainable scheme for the promotion, incubation and financing of these developments.

The project’s components are the following:

  • Raising awareness of the entrepreneurial culture: Providing general training to university and business school teachers, including a group of advisors on education programs development (focused on business modelling and entrepreneurs selection methodology)
  • Creating and fostering incubator networks: To promote alliances and networking with other incubators around the world in order to enhance export possibilities and facilitate access to external markets
  • Creating angel investors’ networks: To establish a formal network, monitoring its activities and encouraging the adoption of international best practices. To organize forums and roundtables that would bring together entrepreneurs and angel investors
  • Improving the entrepreneurial environment: To design specific policies aimed at promoting the creation and development of high growth firms, and alternative capital markets to exclusively serve start up businesses
  • Creating a seed capital co-investment fund: To co-finance those enterprises that already got funds from the angel investors network
  • Creating a discount contracts fund: To help an enterprise performing its first sale by financing working capital

All of these components seek to enhance Panamanian entrepreneurial culture, involving educational institutions such as universities, enterprises, unions and other organizations. This goal can be achieved by reaching a large number of potential entrepreneurs and by fostering the role of the Panamanian Business Accelerator of the City of Knowledge as an effective network incubator.
