infoDev Launches Climate Technology Program in Kenya

infoDev explores the feasibility of establishing a Climate Innovation Center in Kenya

The Climate Technology Program was launched in Kenya in November. infoDev will explore the potential for accelerating the development, deployment and transfer of locally relevant climate technologies in Kenya through the possible establishment of a Climate Innovation Center

The work in Kenya expands on infoDev's ongoing Climate Innovation Center pilot work in India. As one of the most innovative countries in Sub-Saharan Africa[1], Kenya was identified as the next pilot country for the Climate Technology Program given its leadership in the climate agenda, level of entrepreneurial and SME activity and strong need for locally relevant technologies that support mitigation and adaptation of climate change.

A locally based consultant is currently conducting a sector mapping exercise of the Kenyan innovation landscape including outreach to relevant stakeholders in the early-stage climate technology space. These stakeholders will convene for a brainstorming workshop in Nairobi in early March, 2010 to explore the key barriers to clean technology innovation in Kenya. This work will lead to development of concrete recommendations and a "Plan of Action" to establish a Climate Innovation Center. Such a center would form part of a holistic approach to climate technology innovation in Kenya and help catalyze locally relevant technologies, support technology transfer and facilitate entrepreneurship and SME development in the space.
