Africa & Transformation Readiness

The ICT Sector Unit and infoDev of the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the African Union jointly held a workshop on 23-25 February, hosted by the World Bank Country Office in Nairobi, to kick off the eTransform Africa study.

The full title of the project is "Transformation-Ready: The strategic application of information and communication technologies in Africa." It involves a series of sectoral studies covering the transformational impact of ICTs in:

  • Agriculture,
  • Climate Change Adaptation,
  • Education,
  • Financial Services,
  • Health and the Delivery of Public Services
In addition, two cross-cutting studies on the roles of ICTs and of the local ICT sector in regional trade and integration will be included.

The aim of the workshop was to brief the eight consultant teams and to conduct bilateral meetings that included sector experts from the Africa region, who joined in by video conference. The workshop also agreed on a harmonized timetable for future deliverables, including a review meeting, 29-30 June 2011, in Johannesburg and a public presentation of the report in Tunis in October/November. The project partners also held a series of meetings to coordinate on procurement and overall approach.
