Agenda - EPIC mInnovation Workshop, June 20

infoDev, a division of the World Bank that supports entrepreneurship and innovation around the world, is beginning the seven-year EPIC program to expand entrepreneurship and business incubation in the Caribbean.

One of the industries which we will assist is the mobile innovation sector. infoDev has pioneered a leading global program to support mobile application and service entrepreneurs. This is done primarily through mHubs and mLabs - specialized places where mobile entrepreneurs and developers can receive mentoring, networking opportunities, access to finance, and shared business support services (see for more information). infoDev is also piloting virtual incubation models, which are particularly relevant in regional programs.

In the first phase, infoDev has met a range of stakeholders across the region and completed a needs and feasibility assessment. We have developed a preliminary mobile innovation model, explaining our vision how mobile application entrepreneurs, and developers can be supported across the Caribbean region. We now want to gather feedback on the model, which we will then use to refine it and to write a comprehensive business plan for regional mobile incubation facilities initially funded by us, to be implemented towards the end of the year.

This workshop will serve to present the preliminary mobile innovation model to local stakeholders and open it up for feedback. A multi-disciplinary group of about 25 key stakeholders will be convened. In the opening session, we will present the findings from a needs and feasibility study for business incubation in the Caribbean. We will then present infoDev’s mInnovation model. In the afternoon session, the participants will be invited to break-up into small groups for in-depth discussion and preparation of core feedback and critique.

The expected outcome for the event is a comprehensive list of critiques and suggestions for refinements of the model, as well as endorsement of its fundamental assumptions.
