South Africa and World Bank pledge ongoing support for mLab Southern Africa

In a show of growing collaboration, the World Bank and South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) committing to continued support for infoDev’s mLab Southern Africa and other initiatives for inclusive innovation and technology-based job creation.

The agreement builds on the joint growth-enabling activities of our 5th Global Forum on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, held in East London in May 2013. It aims to develop outcomes from the Global Forum into stronger partnerships with the private sector.

"Strategic partnerships such as this one with the World Bank provide a unique platform to further our journey towards knowledge based economy, with particular focus on the improvement of the quality of life of South Africans", said the DST’s acting Deputy Director-General: International Cooperation Resources, Ms Vinny Pillay.

Under the MoU, signed in Pretoria by DST Acting Deputy Director-General for International Cooperation Resources Vinny Pillay and World Bank Country Director for South Africa Asad Alam, the partnership includes the following components:

  1. Continued Support to the Southern Africa Mobile Lab (mLab)
  2. Partnering on Development of Knowledge Economy Reports and Indicators
  3. Pilot Innovative Initiatives in Townships and Rural Areas
  4. Support to the Ongoing Policy Dialogue.
